Captain bleeped out at wrongpop last Friday great set , great crowd, great promotor and when is say great promotor I do mean it. See the captain gets offered a lot of deals where a promoter books the captain and them gives us a bunch of tickets and says you have to sell this many 30 tickets I'll keep half the cash and the band gets the other half. Now that stuff doesn't wash with us. If you call yourself a promotor and what's more expect to earn money off nights by being one them sell the fucking tickets yourself.tHat's what promotion is. Don't ask the bands to do it we are there to play the music and the tiny 30 quid split three ways doesn't even cover the costs of petrol. Now at this point people sometimes say yes but you shoud be prepared to promote your own band. Well the captain is and he does. But let's be honest if we want to play a gig that we promote ourselves it's better for us to wok directly with the venue rather than a middle man who takes a cut then asks us to do the promotion. When we work with the venue we choose the acts we play with often we can make the door price free so as many people come as we can and no slackarse middleman taking any cash.
This is why we love promotors like steve wrongpop he's a better class of promtor. He books the bands, works with the venue AND promotes the night rather than putting the expectation on the bands. He makes sure the crowd is there and the bands get paid. Now thats what i call promotion. And it's because of promoters like steve that we were able to give a free wwtcd tape to every wrongpop goer. So steve whenever you want a herzoga remix just call.

In other news the captain might be getting played on BBC radio subculture tonight. Exciting times indeed plus we are just confirming some date in Stafford with ford squad. And even more exciting we are working on some new material. Imagine thurston Moore recreating daft punk on a commodore 64 with at the drive in doing vocals and you are hot hot close but not disco.

Love captain dan - Via BlogPress from my iPhone

In New Music We Trust...

It's been a while since the Captains have played any new music - but - when a missing Tenori-On cable wrecks rehearsal there's not much you can really do. Skream qween is punk through and through and much more besides but has no love for the electronic wigga beats. Captain dan, as you will remember back in the day was a proud member ofthe league against ska punk.
There's mad love between the two of them but it stretches across a musical divide !
During debate about said musical divide skream qween , partly in jest made the comment the problem with electronic music is any kid with a laptop can do it.
And indeed this much is true: back in the acid rave leading to big beat era when this stuff really started to kick out of the major studios and into the smaller outfits there was still a huge expense involved in getting the kit together. It took time, it took commitment and continualy collecting hardware . Print mags like future music and sound on sound told us our music just wouldn't be good enought if we didn't save the grand for a REAL tb 303.

Fast forward ten years and now we have far more powerful laptops that can make any sound we need. There are plenty of free soft synths and effects out there to keep us going and our virtual samplers have as much memory as we want. Rightly or wrongly thanks to software crackers like SSG and h2ozone we can even get the big name software like ableton or cubase for free. And if you are feeling particularly moral there are plenty of freeware /cheaper ware equivalents which are just as good if not better ( the captain has recently switched to reaper which cost a voluntary 40 quid). Nowadays bloggers like petermkirn, Casper electronics and Get Lofi don't teach us to fetishize that expensive kit we don't have but that it's what we do with our kit that matters , how it enables us creatively and what our relationship with it is along with it's meaning in our creative process. And if it's not right open it up and hack it or build your own!
Now people will still argue that hardware us better than software or analogue sounds better than digital but the point is that software is good enoug

Good enough for any kid with a laptop to make music. And we can slate the pretty who stands there with a MacBook pro and a few ableton presets who has never even heard of granular sampling but that just makes us twats. Big prog rock twats . It's the equivalent of the way Emerson lake and palmer or phil Collins looked down on sid viscious cos he couldn't even hold his bass the right way up.

Way back before the captain was alive punk zine sniffing glue published a now famous article which had just guitar tab for three chords and the statement "here's three chords now go and form a band"

The captain says:
Here's three samples - now go and form a band
http://www.topsamplesites.com/

Filesharing

Stretta destroyed Bono on his blog the stretta procedure today after Bono had been ranting about the evils of filesharing he finished up with this quote from moby

"I've made a record that I really like, and I'd like people to hear it. If someone wants to hear the record, I'll give them a copy of the record. If someone goes online and listens to it on a bit torrent site or spotify or whatever, I'm thrilled. You know, I'm just incredibly flattered if anyone makes the effort to listen to what I've done. For someone to give up an hour or two of their life to listen to the record that I've made, they're doing me a service. I think that the relationship between musician and audience at some point got turned on its head. Musicians started to feel as if the audience needed them. The truth is I need an audience way more than the audience needs me."

The captain feels exactly the same way. Captain nick being the young urbanite electropioneer he is is djing at walrus's scouthall skank rave . It's probably gonna be messy not least because it's always that way when the mighty mighty walrus is involved. Captain Dan being the owner of a small child he is training to beat box is staying in on new year and carrying on setting up the Captains studio. All the gear is in place and new laptop installed (touchscreen reaktor ftw!) next up put in the power cables and audio leads which isn't too much of a huge job because a lot of it is hard wired into the captains live desk. After that we can start optimising the new laptop which should be interesting running windows seven and Maybe even think about acoustic treating the room.

As for daveteonicas? W think he's at an open mic night somewhere , singing.

So what does the new year hold for the captain. Well first up Captain Nick is moving to London. It's going to be an interesting challenge being in an electronics band in two cities , drop box and google wave should help though. But being in London should open up some great gig possibilites.

With this in hand we need to hav a serios think abou how we promote the album / band and what that actually means in a web 2.0 all music Is torrented and free context.....

Love captain dan - Via BlogPress from my iPhone

tooling up

ok so the captain ordered some new gear today. One of the issues with live computer based music is you spend a fortune buying hardware knobs and sliders to control virtual knobs and sliders on your laptop. Because of this the captain was pretty excited when windows 7 included touchscreen, no need for hardware knobs and sliders if you can actually touch the virtual ones on screen. so a new touchscreen laptop from acer is winging its way to the captain as we speak - happy days

[Caption]

Being an Internet band

Ok so we are attempting to become an Internet band. Captain nick is moving to London which is great news- but how do we write without being in the same place at the same time . We considered streaming osc over the net bit this would mean a pc at each end running both ableton and captain dans reaktor ensemble. Theoretically possible but we'd need some super powered pcs which we just don't have. This would e a great way of actually playing together live but we would still have the issue of daveteonicas vocals.

So the next best option seed to be dropbox which would allow us to sync and share audio files very very easily and synced to our iPhones too. But we need some sort of way of talking about what we are sharing her in non realtime. Googlewave seems like a possibility bit it's early days and no iPhone app as yet. Or the other option is this log itelf the various captains could make posts around what they have created discussing the songs as they ate written and embedding the odd file. Is rss the right format? Well the amount if different frontends means we can individualise and go iPhone too. And the interesting part will be that others can see it too.... Were still on the working title YSP, but maybe we shold think of others. We've layed down the first half of the songs and have been stuck in the process of mastering them , trying to capture all of the beutiful magic we got in the mix, but making sure we have the same sort of volume as commercial tracks, which is a lot easier said than done. After crying for several days about our lack of bass compared to little rogo, we decided the only way forward was to use Isotope's Ozone 4. Now Captain Dan is usually against all this juggery pokery, harmonic enhancers, stereowideners and volumer maximisers, but in this case it seems to be giving us good results. Its very powerful and is a realy just adding that final layer of niceness to our mix, some would say the money shot. But time will tell I guess, its easy to overdo this stuff, last night we got stuck in a loudness war with ourselves.

Anyway so what that means is you might hear some more sneaky peaks from the album soon, but we've still got the rest of it to even start (which is gonna be fun as we've decided we need to reacreate all of the samples we nicked from R kellys sopa opera)

but keep your pingus crossed YSP is coming soon, like henry the fifth. in your ears.
<img width='1' height='1' As much as we want to keep it just for us we wouldn't be able to do half the stuff we do if it wasnt for people like Peter Kirn and Matrix, Carl Kenner, Get Lofi and Analogue industries, the midi ox people
So here it is. This should work in any application that accepts midi inputs, but part of the key to getting this to work was some cleaver maths in Reaktor. You might be able to get Glovepie to do this but as we always knew it would go straight to reaktor we left the maths for there. The buttons are easy midi not/gate triggers, but the analogue sticks take a bit of work. They give out a huge range of data and its pretty sensitive, also the centre value varies considerably and they never seem o return to a true centre poitn. Mayeb with a knew controller with stiffer sticks this would be different

In reaktor, we used an event smoother, and squared the output of this. To convert is to 1-127 (rather than 0-1) for midi pitch inputs we use some multiplication and addition modules, to set what value the centre point is and the range the stick would sweep through.

The script

//goto cp setting > midi> output device to midi yoke one and then
//enable midi yoke one as your input on your software

//converts a,b,x,y,back,start,lb,rb to midi notes, apparently
// the notes that glove pie says it converts to are not the ones
//it actually converts to

midi.channel1.c5 = MapRange(Joystick1.Button1, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.d5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button2, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.e5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button3, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.f5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button4, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.g5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button5, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.a5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button6, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.b5 = MapRange(Joystick1.button7, 0,127, 0,64)
midi.channel1.c6 = MapRange(Joystick1.button8, 0,127, 0,64)

// converts left anologue stick to continuous controlers
//cc33
midi.channel1.ModWheel = MapRange(Joystick1.x, -1,1, 0,1)
//cc34
midi.channel1.Breath = MapRange(Joystick1.y, 1,-1, 0,1)

//converts right analogue stick to continuous controllers
//cc35<br By removing the frets and sanding down the fretboard - this guitar is technically fretless but should never be played by fretting. No, this guitar should only be played with a slightly abrasive screwdriver, a clean guitar amp and a Kaoss Pas Mini.

The result is something similar to F# A# ∞ (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) - almost theremin sounding. Mixed with the beat repeat patch on the Kaoss Pad makes for a glitchy soundscape.

Captains bring it to Bitjam

So we had heard about bitjam , the electronic open mic night and wondered how such a thing would work. (surely the tempo sync alone would be enough to boggle the wiring)

We we turned up and were surprised to see mr Waye with his brazilian jazz arkestra. Man that guy knows how to bring the funk and he must have the tastiest synth collection in stoke, dropping in with a lovely analogue korg poly synth.

Next up was Kettlehead or teapot shoulders or some such. Kettleheads music is arms in the air raving - but we were confused by how much a man could be doing on one laptop with no midi controllers, took a cheeky gear perve and saw he was running rebirth and reason. Does this mean he was just switching patterns? Is that still a show? is it anydifferent to what the captains do? does it even matter. The debate about live still rages on I guess but as were seeing more and more small electronic acts its getting kind of important- fucking milli vanilla

Anyway then came the open mic session - turns out you just shout tempos at each other and try and press play in time (though the majestic biggun who runs its got pretty excited when he realised we meant we would play in tempo!)

Have a listen to the video and see if you think the captains brought it. Biggun played ableton with some tasty tiny controllers, a nocturn and a korg nanokey. For the production of a self released DVD the Captains were asked to record audio to compliment the video. Using Will's laptop and a copy of cubase(?) we set up taking audio direct from the PA. We wanted to use FX sends to split the guitar and vocals in to left and right panned tracks but these were already being used for a touch of reverb. So we had to just take a line out and hope for the best. In between holding up set lists to set white balance we just sat back and checked for peaks.

I'm sure the finished product will be out there soon, just depends on who's going to mix it all...

Sent from my iPhone

More photo's can be found here

The sound of trips

SO we started laying down the vocals for our upcoming debut album Y.S.P. today. Even though Davetronica is full in the middle of laying down a new album with our mighty metal friends hanging iscariot he still takes time out for scenetronica and a brew.

All went pretty smoothly really much like recording anyother band - we've taken the stuff we'd recorded in ableton and reaktor and synced it up in Acid pro 6. Acid was the first software to include timestretching (geek talk for: changing the speed of a piece of audio without affecting the pitch) which blew peoples minds away at the time, but nowadays every man and his dog can timestretch, and to be honest ACID hasnt really kept pace with its compatriots, particularly since sony media software took over.

But its quick simple stable and the mixer section is necely integrated into the main window rather than being floating .

To be honest with the exception of funky thinks like Ableton and Reason all the big DAWS (pro tools, cakewalk cubase etc) do pretty much the same thing, its just a case of what interface you like but more importantly what you're used to using - yes we could switch to pro tools which most people seem to think is best, but then we'd have to learn how to use it which would take time, inevitbly result in lost takes and take away from the creative process. And when you;ve been rocking acid since it came out and know its innards you can be pretty damm fly quick on it.

Guess sometimes the old ways are the best.....

PureData Xbox 360 to Midi Script

We wanted to look at controllerism and how we could control midi applications using interesting control devices. Whilst proving to be quite technical and lacking in documentation, PureData, an open-source Max/MSP style programming language seemed like a good start.

The script above uses the Joystick HID (human interface device) object to route values to two midi control outputs. Two number objects are used to display the value of the axes before they are routed to midi outputs. A scaling factor was used to scale down the output number to a value that was useful for midi - 0 - 127.

Using Maple Virtual Midi Port it is possible to internally route the midi data to another application - in this case Ableton. From there you can use the controller axes to control any assignable object in Ableton - we used a filter.

Although proving to be quite impressive it was apparent that we were limited in Ableton with what we could actually do. The directional thumb pads on the controller would always revert to centre (and a value of 66) - this meant that we were limited to what we could actually control in a useful way. This is something that has a lot of potential if used with a more advanced application like Reaktor or if a whole script was built around it in PureData. Also the possibility of using other common HID devices such as Wii controllers adds a more flexible way of controlling midi devices.

Beverley Hills thats where I want to be.....

Being in a band isnt just about making good music anymore. And then somewhere between the walk from your laptopists, the consumtion of a space cookie and arrival at said club it appears the world has obviously changed.
For quite frankly the hippest most happening club in stoke swings vehemently between being stuck in an eighties morrisey song/disco (hey did you know they've just invented watches with calculators on? thats shits fucking amazing) and some sort of ambush created by mods. A whole army of mods who have to pass tests which is why thye can't mix with our sort of people.

Exactly thats just what I thought.

Sounds Like Carvery - An Electronica Open Mic

You can find the humble Open Mic night in most town centres. It's an outlet for guitarists to show off their jazz chords or their melancholic lyrics. We wanted to join in, but not with guitars, with electronics. Ditching their laptops for their handheld devices the Captains tried to "Open Mic" - electronica style.

Using the Tenori-On and Mini Kaoss Pad we could run off batteries and output to a standard mixing desk. All we needed now was something that could resemble a song. We routed the Tenori-on through the Kaoss Pad and began jamming. The result was an acoustic-soundscape but it still lacked something. Trying to keep to the roots of Open Mic and still trying to keep it portable, we decided to hook up an iPhone running the Pocket Guitar App.

The iPhone was connected through the Kaoss Pad - running a delay patch set to hold - with the Tenori-on running solo. We recorded both outputs live and added a couple of effects to polish off the mix. No real time or effort put in to the end recording - we wanted to just get a live snapshot of the sound.

How much stuff do you have to do to be in band these days?

answer: shitloads. It makes everything sit nice and we like to think of compression as making us louder on average. So with that in mind our new material is a bit faster and a bit more booty shaking. Have a listen to this new track not sure it will end up in the set yet, excuse the terrible video, we just wanted to host it on the tube and this was the only video footage I had on my hard drive.

It was made entirely in fruity loops seven. Im not much for taking a track to completion in fruity loops. The way the fx section combine with the step sequencer makes it an incredible powerful tool for creating beats, but the time stretching is way too unwieldy for doing something simple like dropping a loop over the top. Add to this that the playlist sequencer/piano roll combination is just basically not user firendly at all and I tend to start in fruity and go elsewhere. However for this track we were messing round with the slicer module, splitting sections of the sample over different notes and re-ordering them, plus we were programming in at twice the tempo of the song so it made sense to stay in fruity all the way

Captain starts recording - but how did we get here?

Ok oK the captains album is well underway now and we only have those wonderful davetronica vocals to add and then its done.

But a lot of people ask how do we do that crazy captain shit and how does it all work. Well maybe just this one guy asked once, but just in case hes reading here goes

making songs

It kinda works like this - after months of wiring and rewiring we got to thinking about how do we make sure the captain is live when were playing. Normally when you write something with the elctronics as soon as you;ve written it its all done and recorded, so if you want to play it live you then have the choice of what do you just pres splay on and what do you turn off and play live which kind of sucks.

so we decided that the captain would really have to start giggin before we'd finshed writing all the songs to be more acurate we wrote a set list but we didnt write the songs

and it works like this

FIRST WE DO
captain dan and captain nick put together a load of hlaf written/half baked/half sampled recorded ideas

captain nick chops it all up and puts it as loops into ableton

captain dan makes a load of crazy machines in reaktor

THEN WE DO

captain nick starts spitting out the loops in whatever order he sees fit which usually has nothing to do with what we put in in the first place

captain dan start playing over the top with the crazy machine

captain nick gets yardcore with the live effects

captain dave makes a joint, walks slowly to the mic and begins to sing, with live samplign shenanigans and lots of fx

reapeat until it sounds good

so thats how the live set works , it genuinely is live we dont know whats gonna happen but the more we play it the more rehearsed it gets , but depending on how were feeling, or how many joints captain dave made it can sound totally different

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whatwouldthecaptaindo.blogspot.com/2009/01/captain-starts-recording-but-how-did-we.html' title='Captain starts recording -
